Gleninagh in the mist.

Description:

This stone row is described on Archaeology.ie as follows;

"n a natural rise on the lower, N slopes of Gleann Eidhneach overlooking the Gleann Eidhneach river. Comprises six quartz boulders, aligned NNE-SSW, and measuring 8.6m overall. The height of the stones, from N to S, is variable (0.95m, 0.7m, 0.9m, 1m, 0.7m, 0.55m). A kettle-hole lies immediately to E."

The first record I came across of this alignment is in an article in Archaeology Ireland in Winter 1999 on JSTOR by Gerry Bracken. Unusually this "setting" of the sun occurs around 1.50pm in the afternoon. It also says that the site is only illuminated at mid-day and between 1.25pm and 2.25pm. I can only assume that this means on the winter solstice and the lack of sun-light is due to the high mountains all around. I should mention that unfortunately that access is via a private road and permission must be sought for access.
