Patrickstown; Cairn X1

Suspected Alignment / Alignments:  Winter Solstice Sun-set
Site Type: Passage Tomb
Irish Grid Ref: N5953477887
Location: Link to Bing Maps

Description:

This passage tomb is described on Archaeology.ie as follows;

"A circle of low stones, apparently kerb stones, 11m in diam., surround a central orthostat decorated with passage-tomb art. (Herity 1974, 243-4; Shee 1981, 220). In 2008 further passage tomb art was identified on the top edge of the hidden face and outer face of the entrance kerb stone (Frank Prendergast pers. comm.).."

I first came across this proposed alignment in an article in Archaeology Ireland titled "An Intriguing Monument" by Frank Prendergast and Geraldine Stout. This passage tomb is very ruined and all that remain are some kerbstones with rock-art on them. It will require a geophysical survey or an excavation to confirm the definite form of the tomb but if it as theorised then it would be aligned to the winter solstice sunset.
