Corstown; Cairn N

Suspected Alignment / Alignments:  Winter Solstice Sun-set
Site Type: Standing Stone
Irish Grid Ref: N58229877183
Location: Link to Bing Maps

Description:

This standing stone can be argued to be part of the (probable) passage tomb known as Cairn N. The standing stone is described on Archaeology.ie as follows;

"Orientated NW-SE (H 1.75m, 1.35m by 0.35m) Situated 12m ESE of cairn (ME015-009001-)" & the cairn as "Loughcrew cemetery, site N. Remains of cairn 20m in diam., with three orthostats outside its E perimeter. Some 14m E of cairn is single standing stone (ME015-009002-). Listed as a possible passage tomb (Herity 1974, 239). (Shee 1981, 220)."

I first came across this proposed alignment in Martin Brennan's book "The Stones of Time", he proposes that the winter solstice sun sets behind the Hill of Fore from the standing stone at Cairn N.
