Site Type: Passage Tomb
Irish Grid Ref: G6394534432
Location: Link to Bing Maps
Description:
The passage tomb is described on Archaeology.ie as follows;
"Grange North OS 14:14:1 24-4 15-0) "Megalithic Structure" (1940) 500-600 OD G639344 The S half of a circular kerb, of chamber about 10m across, survives. Towards the E three stones, a backstone to the W and sidestones remain."
This passage tomb is located to the east of Knocknarea in the middle of a coniferous tree plantation. If the trees don't block the view the sun should rise over Cairns Hill from this tomb. I've not been able to find a picture of this tomb online, if anyone has a link please let me know.
I came across this alignment in 2016 with the publication of Dr Frank Prendergast's paper 'Interpreting megalithic tomb orientations and siting within broader cultural contexts' Dr Prendergast uses a statistical analysis of all the passage tombs in Ireland to conclude that 24 of them have significant astronomical alignments.
